Actions to take before filing for divorce

Divorce is arguably the most difficult topic to bring up to a spouse. However, sometimes it is an essential action so both people can ultimately be happier.

First, it is important for a person to review all options. This can involve acquiring all the essential paperwork to make sure the divorce goes smoothly. It also involves speaking with an attorney to receive advice and to be ready once you finally pull the trigger. Anyone unsure if a divorce is truly best should follow some key actions to reach a decision one way or the other.

Collect financial information

One of the things an attorney will say first is to get financial affairs in order. This involves collecting financial statements, including bank account statements, proof of income and insurance statements. Before filing the divorce paperwork, it is good for a spouse to see if he or she can live separately throughout the process. The person may need to make changes to her or his monthly budget.

Take stock of valuables

It is not unheard of for spouses to hoard objects once the divorce is underway. Therefore, a person should account for everything the couple owns together. This includes all property, cars and valuables, such as jewelry. It can also include items that hold sentimental value.

Start saving money

If a person wants to wait a few months before filing, then it is a good idea to begin saving money. The person can stash money in a separate bank account. Expenses will add up down the line, including attorney fees and living expenses.

Consider going through a trial separation

A separation does not necessarily have to lead to a divorce, but it is common. A report in USA Today found that approximately 79 percent of married couples who initially separate ultimately do divorce. However, this can be a time of personal reflection for both parties to see if a divorce is truly best.
